Watchet Community Cinema is showing the first film in its spring season, ‘The Courier’, on Friday (January 14).
The film, based on a true story, takes place around the Cuban Missile Crisis.
MI6 receives correspondence from a Russian colonel, Oleg Penovsky (Merab Ninidze), who has information which makes him concerned that Premier Khruschev is about to start a nuclear war. MI6 recruits a businessman, Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch), to go to Russia as part of his business and, under that cover, to meet with Penkovsky. The two become good friends and Penkovsky slips him vital photos which Wynne brings back. However, Wynne’s frequent trips cause him problems at home.
As the KGB closes in on them, the story builds to a powerful climax, all the more unforgettable for being true.
The film will be shown at Watchet Community Cinema, Knights Templar School, Watchet TA23 0EX. Doors open for refreshments at 6.30pm and the film starts at 7pm. Tickets priced £4 are available on the door. For more information or to make a reservation phone Anne on 07557 734795.
