COASTGUARDS, two lifeboats, paramedics and a helicopter were involved in a dramatic six-hour night time rescue of a lone sailor whose yacht was pounded by waves on rocks on Watchet’s West Street beach.

The experienced middle-aged yachtsman was on passage from Penarth to Watchet on Saturday night in his blue 25ft fin-keeled yacht ‘Colette’ when his engine failed.

He was approaching Watchet and tide and a force four north-easterly wind swept him past the entrance and onto a rocky ridge running out from West Street beach.

“I was convinced it would capsize and the yachtsman would be drowned,” said witness Jeff Bourne.
