AN elderly man was taken to hospital after his car plunged down a steep embankment on Cannington Road, Nether Stowey, yesterday afternoon (Wednesday July 19).

Fire crews from Williton and Nether Stowey, plus a rescue tender from Taunton, gave first aid to the 67-year-old while they stabilised the vehicle.

A Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said that crews worked with ambulance personnel to remove the casualty onto a spinal board.

He was then freed from the car and lifted up the steep embankment on to the road.

Road closure caused major traffic hold-ups for several hours.
