TWO casualties had to be cut from their vehicle after a two-car collision on the A39 at Bilbrook on Sunday which closed the road for over five hours.

Six other people were treated by paramedics after the accident, which brought two rescue helicopters, two ambulances, police and fire and rescue crews to the scene shortly after 5pm.

The road was closed from Dragon’s Cross to Washford and heavy bank holiday traffic diverted through Watchet.

A South Western ambulance service spokesman said: “One patient was taken by air ambulance to hospital and a second was transported by ambulance to hospital. Other patients were treated at the scene by paramedic crews.”

The condition of the crash victims is not yet known.

A Devon and Somerset fire service spokesman said that two crews were initially mobilised from Minehead but, because of the seriousness of the accident, additional teams were sent from Williton and a heavy rescue tender from Taunton.

The casualties were released by specialists with cutting equipment working alongside ambulance crews.
