SIR — I wonder if any of your readers might be able to help me.

I am writing a book for publication later this year celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Free Press, looking back over some of the best stories reported in the paper since 1860, the major events and the characters that have made West Somerset what it is today.

I'm compiling an archive of original photos to illustrate some of these stories but so far I have been unable to locate photos of a couple of fascinating events.

For example, might any of your readers know of any photos taken in 1879 of the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VIIth)  hunting with the Devon and Somerset Staghounds at Hawkcombe Head?

These were early days for photography in the district, so it's quite possible that no photos of this event exist.

Did anyone take photos of the 1911 local parliamentary campaign, when Mrs Pankhurst and her Suffragettes flooded into West Somerset, using the by-election as a platform for their campaign for votes for women? She and her supporters held big rallies in Minehead and Watchet.

And surprisingly, I've yet to find any photos from October 1966 of the last train to run on the old Devon and Somerset Railway line, from Taunton to Barnstaple.

I know that the Minehead photographer R Kingsley Tayler took photos of the last train arriving at Dulverton but I've yet to find any copies.

If anyone help, please ring me on 01494 862918.

Jeff Cox.
