Taunton's recycling centre is set to remain closed after a 'major fire.'

Crews from Wellington joined as many as 60 fire fighters who rushed to tackle a blaze which took hold of the Priorswood recycling centre in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The fire engulfed a part of the facility where recycling is sorted before being sent for reprocessing.

Somerset Council have now given notice that the centre will not reopen today (Tuesday, October 3) and have not yet confirmed when the site will reopen.

In an update given on Tuesday afternoon, the fire brigade said "The fire has been surrounded and good progress is being made."

A spokesperson for Somerset Council said: "Residents are advised to delay any planned visits to the Priorswood site or consider alternatives. The details of other recycling sites and their opening hours can be found online: www.somerset.gov.uk/find-your-nearest-recycling-centre/"

It is not yet known what caused the fire.
