Watchet see off Kilve in derby

By in Cricket

SATURDAY saw Watchet travel to local rivals Kilve with only one point separating the two sides in the Division Three table – and they came out on top by four wickets.

Watchet elected to put the home side in on a green deck which they hoped would help their bowlers and they began well, bowling in good areas with Liam Woolgrove putting down a tough caught and bowled opportunity offered by skipper Chris James in the fourth over.

Their pressure soon told as Lott was caught behind in the same over to leave Kilve 5-1.

Ben Robinson came into the attack and struck straightaway, having Munro caught by Dominic Bowden at mid wicket, then took further wickets in his second and fifth overs to remove G Stone and E Martin, leaving Kilve on 50-4 at the drinks break.

James decided it was the time to push the run rate up, but wickets kept tumbling at the other end as Martin Strong removed C Clemenson and C Taylor in quick succession to put Kilve on 916 with 13 overs remaining.

Watchet brought on young leg spinner Archie Walsh, and after a couple of loose deliveries, he found his range and rattled through the tail, including removing James for a well-made 55 – the only batsman to make double figures.

Walsh bagged 4-13 in 3.3 overs as the home side were all out for 100.

In reply, Watchet got off to a bad start when they list Matt Lovell third ball to a smart catch off the bowling of Clemenson.

Fellow opener Townsend soon followed him and Watchet were struggling at 8-2.

Martin Strong and Ian Lowe set about rescuing the innings with a steady partnership, taking the score to 37-3 when Lowe was clean bowled by Munro for 19.

The game was still in the balance, but Strong was then joined by his son Ryan and they looked to punish any loose bowling, but Martin went for one shot too many and was bowled for 21.

Robinson came in and played a chanceless knock to finish 22 not out, and despite a flurry of wickets at the end, he and C Patterson saw Watchet to victory with four wickets and 16 overs in hand.

Kilve: 100 (C James 55; A Walsh 4-13, B Robinson 3-31).

Watchet: 104-6 (R Strong 27, B Robinson 22no, M Strong 21, C Clemenson 2-21, J Payne 2-29).
