Minehead U18s miss out on league and cup double

MINEHEAD Under 18s missed out on a league and cup double when they lost 4-0 to Portishead in the Somerset Under 18 League Cup final at Bridgwater Town’s ground.

The South Division champions were second best on the day against the North Division champions, but they can look back on a fine season after suffering only their second defeat of the season.

Minehead, virtually at full strength, started the stronger and their attacking force of Rob Vickers, Sam Bruford, Roly Kirkbride and Cam Sanford all looked good.

Vickers went close on three occasions and Kirkbride’s fancy footwork almost saw him squeeze a goal in at the near post.

Portishead were big and strong and it was important to keep them out of the penalty area, which Minehead achieved for most of the first half, with Toby Morris outstanding and supported well by his other defenders Toby Waghorn, Dan Vickers and Josh Heath.

Matty Ronan and Callum Barnfield were also strong in their defensive midfield roles and wasn’t until the 45th minute that Portishead broke through when a free-kick was played into the penalty area and and a soaring header went over keeper Joe Ferris.

Having been the better side, Minehead were disappointed to trail instead of lead at the break, and five minutes into the second half it got worse when stronger tackling would have prevented Portishead’s second goal.

Keeper Ferris pulled of a string of good saves, one seeing him tip the ball over at full stretch when a goal looked certain, but the going was now difficult against the bigger Portishead side who now looked the more dangerous.

After 20 minutes of the half it was 3-0 and the game was as good as over.

Minehead brought all five subs over the remaining 20 minutes but despite continuing to work hard they couldn’t prevent Portishead scored one more time for what in the end was a well-deserved victory.

With nine players remaining with the squad and some good young players coming in, Minehead will hope for further success next season.

Man of the match was goalkeeper Joe Ferris.

Minehead U18s: Joe Ferris, Toby Waghorn, Dan Vickers, Toby Morris, Josh Heath, Matt Ronan, Callum Barnfield, Sam Bruford, Rowan Kirkbride, Cam Sanford, Robert Vickers, subs Josh Ruston, Samir Abraham, Abel Clark, Harvey Revelledo, Lowell Binnie (all used).
