Education Secretary hears of challenges

STAFF and students at West Somerset College had the chance to talk in detail with Education Secretary Justine Greening when she visited schools in West Somerset.

West Somerset is one of six Opportunity Areas announced by the Minister in January.

"Justine Greening was very keen to hear what staff and students felt the college needed to continue to improve opportunities for its students,” said the college’s headteacher Zoe Stucki.

“Staff and students talked in detail with her about the challenges that students faced accessing a broad range of post 16 courses, particularly vocational pathways; the difficulties presented by our rural isolation, specifically around public transport; and the need for more high quality, independent careers advice and guidance.”

“The students that Justine Greening met were very clear that greater curriculum choice would mean greater opportunities for them.”
