MINEHEAD Under 13s continued their great run of form with a convincing 7-1 win away to Bridgwater VPR.
They were quick out of the blocks and within minutes Henry Murrell made a run down the left wing, cut into the box and let go a fierce shot which was well saved.
Tom Barber and Murrell caused the home side all sorts of problems on the left and another attack saw Murrell cross low for Ali Alhusni to side-foot in from close range to put Minehead a goal up.
Ollie Prescott then made a good run down the right and cut the ball back to the edge of the box and Ben Bloys’ superb strike found the top corner to make it 2-0.
Oliver Ferris was seeing plenty of the ball in the middle of the park, playing some teasing balls through, and Charlie Purkis was making runs out of defence up the right as Minehead continued to press.
A counter-attack by VPR ended with a shot over the bar, then at the other end Prescott worked hard to win a ball back and linked up with Alhusni, who crossed for man of the match Bloys to make it 3-0.
Bloys was unlucky not to get his hat-trick soon after when he met another cross from Prescott but the keeper made a superb save.
Minehead’s fourth goal came when some fine passing by Ajay Shopland and Ferris set up Prescott to side-foot in from close range.
Bridgwater then went close but again shot over the bar, and Minehead’s next attack saw Daniel Cook make a penetrating run and set up Ali Alhusni who chipped the keeper but saw the ball go agonisingly wide of the post. Minehead went 5-0 up following a poor goal-kick which Barber pounced on and fired home a wonderful long-range strike which gave the keeper no chance, and Frankie Smith made it six just before half-time with a free-kick from just outside the box which was deflected in.
Minehead when straight on the attack in the second half, and after Daniel Cook shot just wide, Frankie Smith intercepted a pass and linked well with Ferris, who played a good ball into the box which was curled around the keeper by Prescott to make it 7-0.
Bridgwater kept their heads up and continued to play some good football, but Riley Merrick was always there at the back to intercept, clear or block the final ball, while keeper Sam Austin-Thompson, who had had little to do in the first half, found himself defending corners and making a number of good saves.
Isaac Sweetland gave another good solid performance and went close to scoring but his shot was well saved, Murrell headed just over from a corner and Alhusni also had a shot saved, and although Minehead put the ball in the back of the net twice more, both efforts were disallowed for offside.
VPR finally scored a deserved consolation towards the end to complete the 7-1 scoreline.
