Porlock picked to join £90m coastal community scheme

PORLOCK has been chosen to set up a new Coastal Community Team tasked to spend at least £10,000 on radical economic plans to create jobs and regenerate the area.

The team, to be made up of councils, volunteers and local businesses, is one of seven West Country organisations joining the Government’s £90 million scheme to revitalise coastal communities and boost visitor numbers and jobs.

Roger Hall, interim head of the new team and a director of the hugely successful Porlock Bay Oysters community project, said: “There are a lot of organisations doing good work in the area but this is a way of bringing them all together to form a dynamic partnership.

“We need to look at ways to create a more balanced community and to provide the jobs and affordable housing that young people desperately need if we are going to keep them here.”

He said the team’s first job would be to provide a new economic development plan and create a new Porlock Vale website to attract more visitors to the area, which takes in Selworthy, Bossington, West Porlock and Porlock Weir.
